This is due to the deforestation and targeted logging in recent decades, and this tree is often found in production areas of forest reserves (Lim, 2010 IUCN, 2013).Īng, L.H., Ho, W.M. The conservation status of this tree is near threatened in Peninsular Malaysia but it is listed as an endangered species in the IUCN Red List. It occurs in lowland to lower montane forest and in sandy heath forest. It is distributed in Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia and throughout Borneo. The genus derived from a Greek word, agathis means a clew, corner of a sail, and this may refer to the leaf shape meanwhile the species epithet means from Borneo. The seed cones are dark reddish-brown to black and ovoid to ellipsoid in shape while the seeds are oblique and obovate in shape which measured around 15 x 12 mm. ![]() ![]() The mature pollen cones are more than 1.7 cm wide, while the microsporophyll is spoon-shaped. The leaves are opposite and measured around 7.2-11.3 cm long x 2.5-4 cm wide. The inner bark is light red to reddish-brown. It can grow up to 42 m tall with about 95 cm in diameter. Agathis borneensis or more commonly known as damar minyak in Malay, is a big, lightweight softwood tree which belongs to the family Araucariaceae. ![]()
